This week’s songs of the day included a couple of important dates, and possibly one of the coolest videos ever made.
Monday, September 8
“Conduit,” by Ben Caplan and the Casual Smokers
Love the voice. Love the beard. Love the video.
Tuesday, September 9
“People,” by David Bazan
I was introduced to David Bazan’s music by a friend, who took me to see him at the Horseshoe Tavern in Toronto.
Wednesday, September 10
“The Freshmen,” by The Verve Pipe
September 10th was International Suicide Awareness Day. This song came out when I was in my mid-teens and was one of the first songs that made me realize how music could be used to approach difficult topics.
Best video link I could find is here.

“The Music of 9/11 From Cohen to Springsteen,” by CBC Music
I was wondering what song might be appropriate to commemorate the anniversary of 9/11 (there were a few possibilities) but CBC Music solved my dilemma by posting a curated list of 9/11 related songs. Another example of how music can heal. Or at least express.
Friday, September 12
“Hurt,” by Johnny Cash
One of Johnny Cash’s most emotional covers, an evocative musical reflection on life and love. Simultaneously a poignant statement on the incredible reach and influence of Cash’s music.
