Songs of the Day – September 15 to September 26, 2014

I’ve got a couple of weeks of music to catch up on. So here goes.

Monday, September 15

Bastille – Pompeii

It’s the history geek in me, I guess.

Tuesday, September 16

Scary Bear Soundtrack – Fault Lines

Scary Bear Soundtrack are an electric synth-pop due who live in Cambridge Bay, Nunavut. “Fault Lines” was written in response to issues of violence against women and abuse, and was entered in CBC’s Rock Your Campus Competition.

Check out Scary Bear Soundtrack on Soundcloud.

Wednesday, September 17

State Radio – Freckled Mary

I don’t remember how I came across this band, but I remember this was the first State Radio song I heard. Great video performance from Rachel Delante.

Thursday, September 18

Jackie Evancho – The Rains of Castamere

CBC Music had a feature on Jackie Evancho, a very young and very talented classical singer, whose latest album includes a great rendition of the song “The Rains of Castamere” from Game of Thrones. It’s amazing how many fictional aspects of George R. R. Martin’s world are becoming realized. Like the food descriptions that became A Feast of Ice and Fire.

This video includes some cool animations.

Tuesday, September 24

Tanya Tagaq – Polaris Prize Performance

Tanya Tagaq was the winner of last week’s 2014 Polaris Prize, an annual prize that “honours, celebrates and rewards creativity and diversity in Canadian recorded music by recognizing, then marketing the albums of the highest artistic integrity.”

You can see the Polaris Prize gala here. Tagaq’s performance starts at around 3:20.00

Tagaq used the Polaris Prize to take a well-deserved shot at PETA, with predictable responses.

Follow her on Twitter @tagaq.

Thursday, September 25

Big Wreck – Blown Wide Open

Friday, September 26

Florence + the Machine – Shake It Out

One of my favourite bands. Love the lyrics, the voice, the drums. All of it.
